Released 26th October on DSPPR

Listen to Korean Frequency / Hashish Dreams HERE

Warriors of the Dystotheque; An international dream team ensemble formed in 2015 by Derry Producer/DJ Jonny Mac, together with Coventry’s Sean Graham and NYC’s twin prodigies Mick and Nick Rufolo. Undertones drummer and fellow Derry man Kevin Sharkey is the latest Warrior to enlist. Melding genres from Balearic to broken beat, from acid to electronica, from downtempo to techno, their innovative and pioneering sounds make waves across the airwaves, frequently heard on national stations such as BBC 6 Music (Nemone, Huey Morgan, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamaq) BBC Radio 1, Jazz FM, and RTE.

Their incredible second album, Anthropause, produced by Howie B (Massive Attack, Bjork, U2) brought the Warriors of the Dystotheque to the attention of legendary Ibizan institutions Pikes and Café Del Mar. And now, their hotly anticipated double A-side Korean Frequency / Hashish Dreams is released 26th October on Chris Coco’s DSPPR. This amazing double header has already been played widely across Ibiza, to a fantastic reception, in the greatest spots all summer long, by Ibizan greats such as Phat Phil Cooper, Andy Wilson, Ken Fan… and Jonny Mac himself.

The first track, Korean Frequency is a joyous, collaborative affair between the five Warriors. Rising pad swells create a delicious dreamscape (Jonny and Sean) complemented after a few bars by a gorgeously tight drum loop (Kevin). Mick joins the party on bass, Nick adds some sumptuous horns, the magic of an untamed Juno arpeggiator and a healthy dose of cosmic sprinkles.

Hashish Dreams is a perfect companion for Korean Frequency, a collaboration with Steve Overend, whose stunning piano melody draws you in from the first bar, complemented by Jonny’s gentle, dreamy synths. Less is more here, the space created between notes as important as the notes themselves. After two minutes, Kevin’s chunky breakbeat and Mick’s funky bass take the track to another level, jazzed, and funked up in the inimitable trademark style of the Rufolo twins with Nick’s sultry sax playing this sublime track out.

Jonny Mac explains a little more: “The track title for Korean Frequency comes from an old club night I ran (Frequency) where Sean was a resident. During that studio session, we ordered in from the local Korean restaurant. Simple really. As for Hashish Dreams, I’d been toying with collaborating with Stevie Overend for some time. He sent some ideas over from a live jam he’d been working on. I stripped it out and rearranged it before again taking it to Florida where it, (like everything else Warriors of the Dystotheque do), received the funked up cosmic Jazz treatment from Mick & Nick.

If this double A side belter is anything to go by, you can expect great things of Warriors of the Dystotheque’s upcoming album. Stay tuned for more details of the album very soon!
